Exit Strategy: Dusty May's Departure From FAU to UM Triggers Domino Effect

By the end of March Madness a year ago, more NCAA tourney coaches than ever before had capitalized on notoriety to move on to new outposts (11 of them sought greener pastures). FAU's Dusty May triggered a domino effect in coaching ranks this season upon choosing Michigan as his next outpost rather than staying in the South with either Louisville or Vanderbilt. There is little doubt that May, an ex-student manager at Indiana, will be a far superior tactician than his Wolverines All-American predecessor Juwan Howard. Maddeningly to many jilted fans, an average of four coaches per tourney leave NCAA playoff teams since seeding started in 1979. This year became the fifth consecutive campaign where there is a minimum of seven such pilots bailing out post-playoffs with more possibly on the horizon as Arkansas' search for a new bench boss ignited another chain reaction when John Calipari left Kentucky.

In every year since 1968, directing a team to the NCAA Tournament has been a springboard to what many believed was bigger-and-better things at a "poach-a-coach" school. Connecticut has had two mentors in this category go on to direct the Huskies to national crowns (Jim Calhoun from Northeastern and Danny Hurley from Rhode Island).

"Movin' On Up" doesn't always work out. On the heels of a 20-win campaign, ACC-bound SMU fired Rob Lanier after only two seasons upon him leaving Georgia State. Time will tell for Ed Cooley after he left a "lifetime" contract with Providence last year for more dough to clean up the mess another All-American (Patrick Ewing) left behind at Georgetown. Following are head coaches since the tourney field expanded to at least 64 entrants in 1985 who had a change of heart and accepted similar job at a different major college promptly after directing team to the NCAA playoffs:
