David Defeats Goliath: Huge Small-School Victories Over Major Colleges
There is an old adage that everyone gets his 15 minutes of fame. It became more difficult, however, for many small colleges to receive a moment in the sun because many major conferences introduced rules disallowing games against non-Division I opponents.
Alaska-Anchorage defeated 50 different DI foes through 2017-18, including at least one major university 10 consecutive campaigns from 1985-86 through 1994-95. But UAA's success pales in comparison to the more than 25 DI opponents who lost to Florida Southern in the 1980s. Florida Southern posted eight triumphs over major universities in 1979-80 and averaged six DI wins per season the first four years of the decade. For the following small colleges, victories over major universities were much more than just a line of type in the agate section carried by a wire service (since the number of DI colleges reached the 175-school plateau in 1959-60):
