Father Knows Best: Dad-Son, Coach-Player Tandems Test Family Bond

There probably are more problems than perks for sons playing under their father at a major university. "It was difficult for him, but not for me," Al McGuire said of his son, Allie, playing under the fiery Hall of Fame coach at Marquette.

Naturally, the biggest source of consternation stems from playing time for a son who isn't an all-conference candidate. Adolph Rupp Jr., who was known as Herky, scored 11 points in nine games in two varsity seasons for Kentucky under his legendary father (1959-60 and 1961-62). "If I think he can help us, he'll play," the elder Rupp said. "If not, not even his mother could persuade me to use him."

Former Texas A&M coach Tony Barone had similar sentiments. "On the court, I throw out the father/son thing," Barone said. "He's got to compete just like any other player. Off the court, it's not so easy."

By any measure, it's difficult to compete under the microscope of playing for a dad. "It was sort of tough love in our family," Jim Harrick Jr. said of playing for his father at Pepperdine in the mid-1980s. "He (his dad) kind of ruled with the iron hand. But I wouldn't have traded that (experience) for anything."

It wasn't quite as strident at Tennessee for the Houston clan. "I'll always have Wade Houston as a motivator wherever I play after this," son Allan said during a standout college career under his father before becoming an NBA All-Star with the New York Knicks. "I'll have the things my father provided. I never want to put pressure on my daughter or son. If he had put pressure on me, I might have been a good player. But who knows how much I would have liked it - or loved the game like I do."

Homer Drew was fond of having a son compete under him when Valparaiso generated national headlines in the late 1990s. "It was very easy for me to coach him," Homer Drew said of Bryce Drew, Valpo's all-time leading scorer. "It's harder for the son because if the coach gets on some players, Bryce hears it--and the coach is also his dad. I admire how Bryce was able to handle some of these things. It was truly an enjoyable family affair. He is an even better son than basketball player."

Said Bryce: "I usually hung around the court after practice for a while so the guys (teammates) could vent frustation about coach before I heard it. I would take some of the comments personally because he's my dad first."

In the small-school ranks, Jerry Meyer, son of all-time winningest coach Don Meyer (at all levels), established the all-time college assists record with 1,314 in 148 games (8.9 apg) for David Lipscomb (Tenn.) and Minnesota-Duluth from 1989-90 through 1993-94 before Lipscomb moved up to the NCAA Division I level. He had a national single-season record 424 assists as a sophomore in 1990-91 before transferring to UMD for his senior campaign. Jerry went on to become the chief analyst and scout for the Rivals.com basketball recruiting coverage.
