From Peon to Pedestal: Small-College Stars Still Shine Bright in Big-Time
How good was Morningside (Iowa) early in the 21st Century? The Chiefs had three players transfer to NCAA Division I schools following the 2000-01 campaign and pace the universities in a variety of statistical categories two years later - Nebraska's Andrew Drevo (led in scoring and rebounding), Northern Iowa's Matt Schneiderman (rebounding) and Denver's Dusty Wadlington (assists).
A striking number of standout major-college players started their careers playing for a four-year small college before transferring. The most prominent player in history in this category is all-time great Elgin Baylor. More than 30 different players became DI conference all-league selections in the 1980s and 1990s after starting their careers at a small four-year college. Chad Barnes, G (Loyola LA 02-03/New Orleans 05)/Averaged 9.7 ppg and 3.5 rpg in his only season with UNO after leading Loyola in scoring and rebounding his two seasons there (14.7 ppg and 5.9 rpg as a freshman and 21.6 ppg and 7 rpg as a sophomore).
Scott Barnes, C (Eastern Montana 81-82/Fresno State 84-85)/Averaged 9.7 ppg and 4.8 rpg for Eastern Montana before averaging 11.7 ppg and 6.6 rpg for Fresno State. Barnes was an All-PCAA second-team selection as a senior when he led the Bulldogs in rebounding (7.4 rpg). Grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds against Karl Malone-led Louisiana Tech when Fresno bowed to the Bulldogs in the first round of the 1984 NCAA playoffs.
Brad Barton, G (BYU-Hawaii 99-00/Weber State 02-03)/Ranked 10th in the nation in assists with 5.2 per game among NCAA Division II players in 1999-2000. Averaged 3 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.5 apg and 1.1 spg in two seasons with the Wildcats.
Elgin Baylor, F (College of Idaho 55/Seattle 57-58)/Averaged 31.3 ppg and 18.9 rpg for College of Idaho (now Albertson College) before averaging 31.2 ppg and 19.8 rpg for Seattle. He was an NCAA unanimous first-team All-American and Final Four Most Outstanding Player as a junior in 1957-58.
Tyrus Baynham, F-G (District of Columbia 84/Middle Tennessee State 86-88)/Averaged 5.7 ppg and 3.1 rpg as UDC freshman teammate of small-school sensation Earl Jones. Averaged 11.8 ppg and 3.7 rpg for MTSU. Collected seven points and three rebounds against Notre Dame in a first-round loss in the 1987 East Regional before becoming an All-OVC second-team selection the next year.

Drake Beranek, G (Nebraska-Kearney 07-09/Nebraska 11)/Averaged 4.2 ppg and 2.4 rpg as a senior with the Huskers. Three-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection averaged 17.9 ppg and 6.9 rpg with Kearney, including a career-high 41 points against Metro State.
Davion Berry, G-F (Cal State Monterey Bay 10-11/Weber State 13-14)/Averaged 18.3 ppg and 4.1 rpg with Monterey Bay while twice earning All-CCAA honors before twice becoming an All-Big Sky Conference first-team selection. Big Sky MVP as a senior played for the same AAU program as Weber State's Damian Lillard, the nation's leading scorer in 2011-12.
Anthony Bethune, F (Lock Haven PA 94-95/Hartford 97-98)/Averaged 14 ppg and 6.3 rpg at New Haven, where he was named All-New England Collegiate Conference as a sophomore after earning league rookie of the year acclaim as a freshman. All-America East second-team selection as a junior when he averaged team-high 15 ppg. He was the Hawks' second-leading scorer (17.9 ppg) and rebounder (5.9 rpg) as a senior.
Andrew Betts, C (C.W. Post NY 95-96/Long Beach State 98)/Averaged 13.8 ppg and 10.4 rpg while shooting 52.6% from the floor in two years with c.W. Post. All-Big West Conference first-team selection in his only season with the 49ers averaged 18.7 ppg, 10.1 rpg and 1.7 bpg.
Emile Blackman, G (LIU Post 13/Niagara 15)/Averaged 6.5 ppg and 2.5 rpg while shooting 51.2% from the floor and 47.1% on three-pointers as a freshman.
Don Boldebuck, C (Nebraska Wesleyan 52-53/Houston 55-56)/Averaged more than 20 ppg for Nebraska Wesleyan before averaging 23 ppg and 17 rpg in leading Houston in scoring and rebounding both of his seasons with the Cougars. He paced them in scoring in both of their NCAA playoff games in 1956.
Jimmy Bolden, G (St. Mary's MI 91-92/Wichita State 93)/South Florida transfer averaged 16.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 5.9 apg for St. Mary's (Mich.) before leading Wichita State in scoring (13.4 ppg), assists (2.6 apg) and steals (40).
Mike Born, G (Nebraska-Omaha 85-86/Iowa State 88-89)/Averaged 10.5 ppg for Nebraska-Omaha before averaging 8.6 ppg and 2.5 apg for two NCAA Tournament teams at Iowa State. Scored six points in each of his NCAA playoff games.
Tom Boswell, C (South Carolina State 72-73/South Carolina 75)/Two-time All-MEAC selection (averaged more than 17 points and 11 rebounds each season with SCSU) outscored teammates Mike Dunleavy and Alex English to lead the Gamecocks' NIT squad in scoring average with 16.5 ppg. Boswell became a first-round draft choice of the Boston Celtics as an undergraduate.
Jim Boylan, G (Assumption MA 74-75/Marquette 77-78)/Fifth-leading scorer for 1977 NCAA Tournament champion. He scored 14 points in the tourney final against Phil Ford-led North Carolina. Boylan averaged 10.1 ppg and 3.1 rpg while shooting 78.8% from the free-throw line with Assumption.

Averaged 13.2 ppg and 5.3 rpg with the Ducks, appearing in NCAA tourney as a junior (10 points and 6 rebounds in 72-71 opening-round East Regional defeat in OT against Seton Hall).
Gary Brell, F (North Dakota State 68/Marquette 70-71)/Averaged 15.2 ppg and 12.9 rpg for NDSU before averaging 12.8 ppg and 8.6 rpg with MU. As a senior, he distributed a game-high eight assists in 60-59 NCAA tourney defeat against Ohio State before grabbing nine rebounds in 91-74 win against Kentucky in Mideast Regional third-place game.
Dion Brown, F (Chaminade, Hawaii 87/Washington 89-91)/Averaged 10.9 ppg and 5.1 rpg as a sophomore, 11.3 ppg and 6.6 rpg as a junior, and 15.5 ppg and 7.9 rpg as a senior. Led the Huskies in rebounding his last two seasons. Brown averaged 11.3 ppg and 5.5 rpg as a freshman with Chaminade.
Jon Bryant, G (St. Cloud State MN 96-97/Wisconsin 99-00)/All-North Central Conference selection and team MVP with 17.3 ppg as a sophomore after being named NCC Freshman of the Year when he hit 57.4% of his three-point attempts. Top three-point shooter for the Badgers' 2000 Final Four team as a senior averaged 7.3 ppg in his two-year DI career.
John Bunch, C (Lincoln PA 03-04/Monmouth 06-07)/Led Division III in blocked shots as a freshman and sophomore, including two games when he rejected an NCAA record 18 shots. Member of Monmouth's 2006 NCAA Tournament team before leading the Northeast Conference in blocked shots with 3.3 per game as a senior in 2006-07.
Frank Burgess, G (Arkansas-Pine Bluff 54/Gonzaga 59-61)/After leaving the military (Air Force), he averaged 28.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg with the Zags. Led the nation in scoring with 32.4 ppg as a senior when he was an NCAA consensus second-team All-American.
Burr Carlson, F (Central Connecticut State 49-50/Connecticut 52)/Averaged 16 ppg with CCSU before averaging 12.6 ppg and 14.5 rpg with UConn.
Leroy Chollet, F (Loyola LA 45/Canisius 47-49)/Helped propel Loyola of New Orleans to NAIB Tournament championship before becoming first 1,000-point career scorer in Canisius history.
Ronnie Clark, F (Florida Southern 00/Colorado State 02-04)/Sunshine State Conference freshman of the year with Florida Southern (6.4 ppg, 3 rpg, 53.3 FG%). Averaged 9.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg while shooting 52.7% from the floor in his three-year career with the Rams, who appeared in the 2003 NCAA playoffs.
Jeff Condill, G (SIU-Edwardsville 83/Gonzaga 84-86)/Averaged 12.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 2.8 apg as a sophomore and 10.5 ppg as a junior before becoming an All-WCAC selection as a senior (13.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.1 apg, and league-high 1.5 spg). His first season with the Zags was as John Stockton's running mate. Averaged 8.2 ppg and 3.4 rpg as a freshman with SIUE.
Terry Connolly, F (Shepherd WV 87-88/Richmond 90-91)/Averaged 8.2 ppg each of his two seasons with Spider NCAA playoff teams. Member of first #15 seed to defeat a #2 seed (Syracuse in 1991).
Chuck Cooper, F (West Virginia State 45/Duquesne 47-50)/Averaged 20 ppg with WVS before U.S. Navy veteran averaged 10.6 ppg with Duquesne (All-American as senior).

Barry Davis, F (Sam Houston State TX 73/Texas A&M 75-76)/Freshman on Sam Houston State's top-ranked NAIA team. Juco recruit became two-time All-SWC selection, averaging 14.7 ppg and 8.7 rpg with the Aggies.
Miah Davis, G (Cal State Stanislaus 01/Pacific 03-04)/Led Big West Conference in free-throw shooting as a junior before becoming the league's MVP the next season when he finished in the league's top 15 in eight statistical categories. Third-leading scorer in the CCAA with 15.5 ppg in his only season with Stanislaus after transferring from junior college.
Nathan Day, F (Tennessee Temple 97/Liberty 99-01)/Averaged 10 ppg and 6 rpg as a freshman with Tennessee Temple. All-Big South Conference second-team selection as a senior when he averaged 13.3 ppg and 7.1 rpg, finishing his LU career with marks of 9.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg.
Jessie Deister, G (Cedarville, Ohio 98-99/Wright State 01-02)/Averaged 18.3 ppg as a freshman and 15.1 ppg as a sophomore while shooting 42.9% from beyond the three-point arc and 86.1% from the free-throw line with Cedarville. Averaged 13.6 ppg as a junior in 2000-01 when he was named MCC Newcomer of the Year before contributing 14.2 ppg and 2.9 rpg as a senior.
Dan Delgado, G (Massachusetts-Boston 90/Boston University 92-94)/Led Mass.-Boston in scoring as a freshman with 19.1 ppg before pacing BU in the same category as a sophomore with 14.8 ppg.
Clarence Dickerson, G (Elon NC 78-79/Hawaii 81-82)/Averaged 17.9 ppg with Elon before averaging 13.2 ppg and 3.1 rpg for UH.
Dick Dickey, F (DePauw IN 45/North Carolina State 47-50)/Averaged 5.1 ppg for DePauw as a Naval trainee during World War II. Four-time All-Southern Conference first-team selection finished his N.C. State career as the school's career-leading scorer (1,644 points in 123 games for a 13.3 average).
Andrew Drevo, F (Morningside, Iowa 00-01/Nebraska 03-04)/Two-time All-North Central Conference selection averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds as a sophomore after being tabbed the team's MVP as a freshman. As a junior, he led the Huskers in scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.3). Contributed 10.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg as a senior.
Jack Eskridge, C (Graceland, Iowa 42-43/Kansas 47-48)/After his college career was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Marines during World War II, he set a Kansas school with 30 points in one half against Nebraska. Following a couple of years in the NBA, he returned to KU and served as an assistant coach during the Wilt Chamberlain era.
Shaun Fein, G (Stonehill MA 97-98/Georgia Tech 00-01)/Northest-10 Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore when he averaged 19.7 ppg and 4.8 apg after averaging 14.8 ppg as a freshman. Third-leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets as a junior with 10.6 ppg. Leading scorer as a senior with a 15.6-point average tallied 25 points in a 73-68 win at Virginia.
Mike Fenwick, G (Slippery Rock State PA 81/Akron 83-85)/Averaged 8.6 ppg and 2 rpg as a freshman with Slippery Rock. Averaged 1.8 ppg and 2.1 apg for the Zips, playing his final season under coach Bob Huggins.
Tyler Field, C (UC San Diego 98/San Diego 00-01)/Division III Freshman of the Year when he averaged 24.2 ppg and 14.3 rpg and shot 65% from the floor. Averaged 8.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg in two years with the Toreros. Led the WCC in field-goal shooting as a sophomore (60.6%) in 1999-2000.
Khris Fortson, F (UC Riverside 83/UC Santa Barbara 85-87)/Averaged 11.1 ppg and 5.4 rpg as a sophomore, 10.1 ppg and 5 rpg as a junior, and 13.8 ppg and 7.1 rpg as a senior. Led the PCAA in field-goal shooting as a sophomore (66.5%). Averaged 5.8 ppg and 3.4 rpg as a freshman with UCR.
Chris Gardler, G (Widener PA 87-88/St. Joseph's 90-91)/Averaged 11.3 ppg and led the Hawks in assists, steals and free-throw shooting in his first season with them. Averaged 13.7 ppg in his two years with Widener.
Jasen Gast, G-F (Incarnate Word TX 00/Stephen F. Austin 02-04)/Division II's top three-point shooter in 1999-2000 (9.4 ppg, 90 FT%, 54.2 3FG%). Averaged 7.3 ppg in three years with the Lumberjacks. Led SLC in free-throw shooting (87.5%) as a junior.
Jimmy Gavin, G (Wisconsin-Parkside 14-15/Winthrop 16)/Two-time All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection averaged 16.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg and 3.1 apg with UWP before averaging 18.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg and 3 apg for WU to become an All-Big South Conference first-team choice. He scored a career-high 38 points at North Carolina State.
Matt Gladieux, G (Bellarmine KY 96-98/Coastal Carolina 00)/Led the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring (20.1 ppg) in 1997-98. All-Big South Conference first-team selection in his only season with the Chanticleers (16.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.9 spg, 42.5 3FG%). Played first two campaigns with Toledo and was a part-time starter for the Rockets as a sophomore.
Wayne Glasgow, G (Northwestern Oklahoma State 47/Oklahoma 49-50)/Averaged 12.9 ppg with NWOS before averaging 11.8 ppg with OU.
Gerald Glass, F (Delta State MS 86-87/Ole Miss 89-90)/Averaged 26.1 ppg and 12.5 rpg as a sophomore at Delta State after averaging 12.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg as a freshman. Ranked among the nation's top 20 scorers each of his two seasons as an All-SEC first-team selection with the Rebels. Played in the 1989 NIT before becoming an NBA first-round draft choice the next year.
Max Gotzler, F (Oregon Tech 05-06/Boston University 08)/German native averaged 7.1 ppg and 4 rpg while shooting 51.7% from the floor with OIT, participating in 1973 NAIA DII Tournament. Averaged 2.5 ppg and 2.1 rpg for BU.
Robert Gray, F (Cal Poly Pomona 72-73/Wichita State 75-76)/Averaged 13 ppg and 5.8 rpg with WSU. As a senior, he collected 10 points and team-high tying 7 rebounds in opening-round defeat against eventual NCAA Tournament runner-up Michigan.
Carl Greenfield, F (South Carolina State 67/Eastern Kentucky 69-71)/Averaged 5.1 ppg and 8 rpg for SCSU before averaging 11.1 ppg and 11.8 rpg for EKU.
Chuck Guittar, F-C (New Haven CT 93-94/Drexel 96-97)/All-America East Conference third-team selection as a senior when he averaged 13.5 ppg and a team-high 8.3 rpg. Chipped in with averages of 9.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg the previous year. Contributed team highs of 16.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg as a sophomore with New Haven.
David Hallums, G (BYU-Hawaii 85-86/Hawaii 88-89)/Sparked BYU-Hawaii to its first NAIA Tournament in 1986 before averaging 7.7 ppg and leading the Rainbows in assists his final two seasons.
Sherman Hamilton, G (Florida Tech 93/Virginia Commonwealth 95-97)/Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year in 1992-93 when he averaged 14.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.8 apg and 3 spg. Averaged 8.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 4.9 apg as a sophomore, 11 ppg and 4.3 apg as a junior, and 9.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 4.7 apg as a senior with VCU. All-CAA second-team selection in 1995-96.
Larry Hampton, F-G (Acadia, Nova Scotia 81/Fairleigh Dickinson 83-85)/Led FDU in scoring as a senior with 14.9 ppg. He was an All-ECAC Metro second-team selection in 1984 and 1985 after averaging 17 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 4.3 apg as a sophomore. Collected 10 points and six rebounds vs. Southeast Regional #1 seed Michigan in the 1985 NCAA playoffs.
Matt Hanson, F (St. Cloud MN 05/Cal Poly 07-08)/Averaged 9.7 ppg and 5.9 rpg for St. Cloud after transferring from Vermont. Averaged 6.1 ppg and 4 rpg with Cal Poly, leading the Mustangs in rebounding as a senior with 5.3 per game.
Mike Hanson, G (Tennessee-Martin 89/Louisiana State 91-93)/Scored 40 points vs. LSU as a freshman when he led Tenn.-Martin in scoring (20 ppg) and assists. Erupted for 31 points against both Tennessee and Illinois as a sophomore when he was the Tigers' third-leading scorer (12.7 ppg) before his playing time decreased significantly his final two seasons. Member of three LSU teams that participated in the NCAA playoffs.

E.J. Harrison, G (Western Connecticut State 95-96/Connecticut 98-99)/Averaged 1.9 ppg for UConn's 1999 NCAA titlist after averaging team-high 19.3 ppg and 2.7 spg for WCSU in 1995-96.

Ryan Hawkins, F (Northwest Missouri State 17-21/Creighton 22)/All-time leading rebounder for Northwest (948) and in MIAA Tournament (84) was Most Outstanding Player at the 2021 Elite Eight before becoming leading scorer and rebounder with the Bluejays' NCAA tourney team.
Jordan Heath, F (Roberts Wesleyan NY 11/Canisius 13-14)/Named to NCCAA All-Tournament Team when averaging 14.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 2.8 bpg. Twice ranked among top 10 in MAAC in rebounding, FG% and blocked shots. He had DI career highs of 28 points vs. Saint Peter's plus 13 rebounds and 9 rejections vs. Rider.
Art Helms, F (Southwest Missouri State 53-54/Houston 56)/Averaged 13.7 ppg for SWMS before averaging 13.1 ppg and 10.1 rpg for UH's first NCAA playoff team (grabbed team-high 10 rebounds in tourney debut against SMU).
Larry Hendrix, F (Abilene Christian TX/Oklahoma 81-82)/Averaged 5.6 ppg and 2.6 rpg for OU under coach Billy Tubbs, scoring 31 points in a game against Purdue.
Marchell Henry, F (St. Andrews Presbyterian NC 83-84/East Carolina 86-87)/Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1983-84 (17.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 50.8 FG%). Led ECU in scoring in 1985-86 (15.6 ppg) and 1986-87 (19.1 ppg). All-CAA first-team selection as a senior when he also paced the Pirates in rebounding (6.6 rpg).
Rich Henry, F (North Dakota State 82/Maine 84-86)/Averaged 5 ppg and 2.7 rpg as a freshman with North Dakota State. Led Maine in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage as a junior and senior. He set a school record by hitting 59.1 percent of his field-goal attempts in 1984-85.

UTEP's second-leading rebounder as a senior (6.5 rpg). Averaged 4.2 ppg and 4.4 rpg for 1992 NCAA playoff team that upset #1 seed Kansas in the Midwest Regional.

Danny Singletary, G (Ohio Valley WV/Coppin State 97-98)/Led National Small College Athletic Association in scoring with 27.6 average before averaging 12.5 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.8 apg and 2.3 spg with Coppin. Scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in second half of shocking 78-65 first-round victory over South Carolina in 1997 NCAA playoffs before collecting team-high six assists and game-high six steals in 82-81 setback against Texas.
Dylan Sinnickson, F (Middlebury VT 12-15/Vermont 16)/All-NESCAC second-team selection in 2014-15 with team-high averages of 17.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg, finishing his career there with 12.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Backup for Vermont shot 55% from the floor (11 of 20) and 44.4% from beyond the three-point arc (4 of 9).

Tom Villemure, G (Lake Superior State MI 57-58/Detroit 60-61)/Averaged 25 ppg with Lake Superior before playing for a couple of NIT teams with U of D. Teammate of Dave DeBusschere averaged 2.1 ppg in 1959-60.
Dusty Wadlington, G (Morningside, Iowa 01/Denver 03)/J.C. transfer was named North Central Conference Newcomer of the Year and also earned first-team all-league honors after breaking Morningside's single-season assist and steal records. Led the Pioneers in assists as a senior with 3.8 per game.
Tom Wahl, G (Mankato State MN 92-93/Nebraska 95-96)/Named to 10-man All-North Central Conference team as a sophomore when he averaged 13.1 ppg and 3.3 apg after averaging 10.6 ppg and 3.3 apg as a freshman. Averaged 8.4 ppg and 4 apg as a junior at Nebraska before averaging 6 ppg as a senior.
Lucas Walker, F (Montana State-Billings 05-06/Saint Mary's 08-09)/Australian averaged more than 13 points and five rebounds per game with MSU-Billings. Contributed 3.2 ppg and 2.4 rpg as a junior and 2.7 ppg as a senior.
Tony Walker, F (Kean College NJ 87/St. Peter's 89-91)/Finished his St. Peter's career No. 10 in all-time scoring with 1,325 points. He was an All-MAAC first-team selection as a senior (19.2 ppg and 7 rpg). Averaged 21.8 ppg as a freshman with Kean.
Roosevelt Wallace, F (Virginia Union 88-89/Arkansas 91-92)/Averaged 9.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg for VUU as a freshman and sophomore. Averaged 8.8 ppg and 5.7 rpg as a part-time starter for the Razorbacks' 1992 NCAA playoff squad.
Steve Weingarten, F (Connecticut College 07/La Salle 09-11)/Averaged 2.9 ppg and 1.3 rpg as a freshman (hitting 10 of 11 free-throw attempts) before transferring to DI, where he averaged 5.4 ppg and 4.4 rpg as a part-time starter for the Explorers as a junior before contributing 4.7 ppg and 3.2 rpg as a senior.
Kevin Whitted, F (Pfeiffer NC 91/Tennessee 93-95)/He was the Volunteers' second-leading scorer as a senior (12 ppg).
Ryan Woods, G (Pace NY 09-10/NJIT 12-13)/Led Pace in scoring average both seasons while averaging 14.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg. Averaged 12 ppg and 4.1 rpg with NJIT.
Haywoode Workman, G (Winston-Salem State NC 85/Oral Roberts 87-89)/Averaged a modest 10 ppg and 3 rpg with Winston-Salem before averaging 17.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 4.4 apg in three seasons for ORU.
Dave Zeigler, F (Youngstown State 79-80/Kent State 82-83)/He was an All-MAC second-team selection as a senior when he led the Golden Flashes in scoring (18.4 ppg) after contributing a team-high scoring average of 13.3 ppg in half a season as a junior. Averaged 26.3 ppg and 5.2 rpg with YSU, leading the Penguins in scoring both years.
Phil Zevenbergen, F (Seattle Pacific 83/Washington 86-87)/Attended community college before averaging 10.1 ppg and 6.2 rpg for the Huskies. Appeared in 1986 Midwest Regional against Michigan State.
