- Coached San Francisco to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956 before finishing third in 1957
- Named national coach of the year by UPI in 1955 and 1956
- Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991
- Freshman coach at San Francisco under Pete Newell in 1948-49 and 1949-50 while coaching St. Ignatius High School
- Coached the San Francisco Saints for one season in the old American Basketball League
- Final Top 20 Rankings (three: AP/UPI)--1955 (1/1), 1956 (1/1) and 1958 (4/3)
- All-Americans (four): San Francisco's Gene Brown (1958), Mike Farmer (1958), K.C. Jones (1956) and Bill Russell (1955 and 1956).
