Training Ground: VCU Second School Losing Eight Different Head Coaches
Mike Rhoades' departure to Penn State enabled Virginia Commonwealth to become the second school to lose eight head coaches over the years to other major colleges or the NBA. Last season, Matt McMahon's shift to Louisiana State made Murray State the first school to lose eight mentors in this category. LSU was the fourth different current SEC member to poach a coach from the Racers in a 31-year span.
Incredibly, Tulsa lost four coaches in a seven-year period from 1995 to 2001. The following list shows Idaho (11 years from 1983 to 1993), Princeton (12 years from 2000 to 2011), Murray State (14 years from 1985 to 1998), New Orleans (14 years from 1994 to 2007), Penn (15 years from 1971 to 1985), VCU (2009 to 2023) and Louisiana Tech (16 years from 1974 to 1989) losing four coaches in comparable short spans:
